Every major digital platform you use — YouTube, TikTok, Spotify, Netflix, Instagram, Twitter/X — runs a recommendation system whose job is to predict what content will keep you on the platform the longest. These systems have become so effective at their task, and so seamlessly integrated into the experience of using these platforms, that most users have stopped thinking of them as a mediating layer at all. The feed just feels like the world.

This is worth interrupting. What you see on these platforms is not a reflection of what exists — it's a highly filtered subset, shaped by your past behavior, optimized to extend your session, and increasingly disconnected from anything resembling a diverse information diet.

How the Systems Actually Work

Most recommendation algorithms operate on some variation of collaborative filtering: the system looks at your behavior (what you watched, liked, shared, paused on, skipped), finds users whose behavior patterns resemble yours, and recommends content those users also engaged with. Over time, this creates a highly personalized loop.

The core optimization target matters enormously. When a system is optimized for watch time (how long you stay on a video), it learns that certain types of content — emotionally stimulating, confirming existing beliefs, progressively more extreme versions of what you've already watched — generate longer sessions. The algorithm isn't "trying" to radicalize anyone in any meaningful sense. It's trying to maximize a metric, and certain content types reliably move that metric.

The Filter Bubble Is Real (and More Complicated Than You've Heard)

The concept of the "filter bubble" — the idea that algorithmic personalization seals you inside an information environment that confirms your existing views — has been debated extensively among researchers. The picture is more nuanced than either the alarmist or dismissive version suggests.

You can't fully escape algorithmic curation while using these platforms, but you can make deliberate choices that introduce more friction into the loop:

  1. Use subscriptions and bookmarks instead of feeds: RSS readers, newsletter subscriptions, and podcast apps give you a list of sources you've chosen rather than a feed of what an algorithm thinks you'll engage with.
  2. Search intentionally: Rather than letting the homepage surface content, arrive at platforms with a specific topic in mind and search for it. This partially bypasses the recommendation layer.
  3. Deliberately consume outside your pattern: Regularly read a publication or follow creators whose perspective differs from what you normally encounter. The algorithm will adjust to incorporate the new signal.
  4. Audit your own feeds periodically: Spend five minutes asking what topics dominated your feed last week. The answer often reveals how narrow the loop has become.

The Structural Question

Individual tactics help at the margins, but the deeper question is whether systems optimized for engagement — rather than for user wellbeing or informational diversity — are the right infrastructure for how a society processes information. That's a policy and design question, not just a personal media hygiene question. The two conversations need to happen simultaneously.
